Electrical Appliance Testing
In Detail
The Formal Visual Inspection
This inspection checks for the following: damage to the cable sheath; damage to the plug; inadequate joints, including taped joints in the cable; that the outer sheath of the cable is effectively secured where it enters the plug or equipment; that the equipment has not been subjected to conditions to which it is not suited e.g. it is not wet or excessively contaminated; damage to outer casing of equipment.
In addition, the plug cover is removed from each appliance to check that the correct fuse is in place; the cord grip is effective; the cable terminations are secure and correct, including an earth where appropriate; and there is no sign of internal damage, overheating or ingress of foreign matter.
In the event that a plug top needs replacing, re-wiring or the fuse changed, our engineer would carry this out immediately.
Additional Electrical Testing
Such testing is carried out on all Class 1 (earthed) appliances. Two important tests are carried out: the Earth Bond Test, to ensure that any exposed metal work on the appliance is securely connected to a safe earth potential; the Insulation Test, to ensure that a breakdown of the insulation cannot occur between any live parts within the appliance and the parts of the casing that the user may touch.
Inspection and test results are entered into a Register giving the date tested, together with individual appliance serial number, description, location and pass/fail status. In the event of an appliance being found to be unsafe, that appliance would be labelled accordingly and a detailed Fail Report issued to a responsible person. Any such equipment should be removed from use immediately.
Omnisafe operates a totally unbiased independent safety service and would therefore decline to offer any quotation for repair or replacement of any equipment. However we do supply replacement BS approved plugs, fuses and connectors at cost price and fitted free of charge.
